In short, this is one of the most comfortable, relaxed, and secure-feeling areas in Canada’s Capital. You’ll have a hard time wanting to leave once you discover New Edinburgh’s tranquility and natural beauty!
OC Transpo operates several bus routes nearby including Routes 1 and 7. However, this is a community ideally suited for exploration on foot, packed to the brim with goodies to discover (especially if you’re a dog walker). It’s clean, comfortable, and offers a variety of exceptional walking routes. It’s also a cyclist’s haven, especially as you move further away from the fast pace and shops of Beechwood Avenue and venture into quieter, calmer surroundings.
New Edinburgh is situated within Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward. This area gets a bad rep for being only the home of the rich and famous, but that’s far from the truth. In actuality, it’s a vibrant, loving, and welcoming community that encourages active exploration, enjoys a good conversation, and is deeply passionate about nature. Nearby, you’ll find Vanier, Rockcliffe, and Centretown.
There are a few notable educational options in the immediate New Edinburgh area. For public options, these include École Élémentaire Publique Trille Des Bois on Genest Street, Manor Park Public School, and Rockcliffe Park Public School. St. Brigid School is the nearest Catholic option. There are also several well-known private schooling options including Fern Hill School, the Macdonald-Cartier Academy, Elmwood School and, most notably, Ashbury College.
New Edinburgh is located northwest of Vanier, bordered along its southeast edge by iconic and thriving Beechwood Avenue. To the northwest, it’s bordered by Rockcliffe Park, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, and the Ottawa River. The affluent Rockcliffe neighbourhood forms the eastern edge, whereas the Rideau River serves as the southwestern border.
There’s never a bad time to take in the view from Rideau Falls just off Green Island. Or, explore the grounds of the Rideau Hall, a sprawling estate in the heart of the neighbourhood. Otherwise, go dog-walking in Stanley Park, a favourite thing to do among locals, or stroll along Beechwood Avenue to discover its many shops, eateries, and local landmarks including the St. Charles Church. Don’t forget to stop by the ever-popular local farmer’s market, which is set to be held at the church once more upon the completion of the beautiful new condo development on the site.
There are many wonderful little cafés to be found in the area. Stop by Union Street Kitchen Café for exceptionally warm and friendly service before resuming your stroll along streets lined with brickwork homes and plenty of greenery. Or, when in season, visit the Tavern on the Falls at Rideau Falls Park, offering truly amazing views of the Ottawa River, Canada’s Capital, and the Gatineau hills across the way. There’s also the local staple, The Scone Witch on Beechwood, for great coffee and conversation – not to mention some delectable baked goodies. Lastly, a trip to the area is never complete without a stop at Jacobsons for gourmet foods and gifts, Red Door Provisions for some of the best service and snacks in the city, and Ola Cocina Taqueria on Barrette Street for some of the finest Mexican cuisine around.
