Frequently Asked Questions

If heading south on Bank Street from Wellington, you’ll eventually pass under Highway 417. Upon exiting the other side, you’ll be in the Glebe! This sprawling, lively, and incredibly beautiful community is bordered to the north by Highway 417, to the south and east by the ever-iconic Rideau Canal, and to the west by Dow’s Lake and the Glebe Annex.

Definitely! The Glebe is incredibly family and student-friendly, and it’s also a popular choice for those seeking heritage properties and plenty of natural beauty. Even with Bank Street’s hustle and bustle passing through the heart of the neighbourhood, it’s absolutely one of the safest and most welcoming areas in all of Ottawa. Whether you want to study by the canal, catch a movie with friends, take in a Redblacks game or concert at TD Place, or bring your beagle to the local fenced-in dog park, you’ll enjoy a safe and comfortable community wherever you go.

Bank Street is the main artery going through the heart of the Glebe, enabling streamlined access to many of the most popular OC Transpo bus routes. Not only that, but the Glebe is a haven for cyclists thanks to the nearby Rideau Canal walkways and sprawling park spaces. Of course, many locals prefer to walk and explore this colourful, vibrant area, especially in the warmer months for the Tulip Festival, Great Glebe Garage Sale, and the ongoing markets and events at Lansdowne Park.

The Glebe can be found in what is known today as Capital Ward. It joins Old Ottawa South and East, Dow’s Lake, Carleton University, Heron Park, and the Glebe Annex under this distinction.

To start, here are the public schools located in the Glebe or its nearby Annex area:
  • First Avenue Public School
  • Mutchmor Public School
  • Glebe Collegiate Institute
  • Cambridge Street Community Public School
  • The Element
There is also a Catholic school in this neighbourhood:
  • Corpus Christi Elementary School
Lastly, there is the following private high school:
  • Blyth Academy

The Glebe is iconic thanks to its residents and many local businesses. In particular, these include mainstay mom-and-pop shops, eateries, and so much more. Some standout examples include Kettlemans Bagel, Il Negozio Nicastro, Crosstown Traffic records, and Bloomfields Flowers, among many others. Strolling down Bank Street, you’re sure to find at least half a dozen stores that will pique your interest, selling everything from one-of-a-kind sushi knives to handicrafts, delicious baked goodies, and so much more. Every time you head out to explore, you’ll surely discover even more!
Rhyming aside, there’s more to take in your stride as you wander the Glebe. Of course, this should include mandatory stops at some of the incredible local eateries the community is renowned for. Just a few examples include Wild Oat Bakery, Café & Farm, La Brioche Pastry & Bakery, La Strada, Banditos, and Marble Slab Creamery – and that’s merely the appetizer! For chain options, do not overlook JOEY Lansdowne and Local.
After some retail therapy and unwinding with a lunch unlike any other, why not take in the latest blockbuster at one of Cineplex Cinemas Lansdowne’s special VIP seated screening rooms? Or, visit Sylvia Holden Park and its attached, fully fenced-in dog park – a great way to make new friends of the two-legged and four-legged variety. Alternatively, take in a Cityfolk concert along the hills of Lansdowne Park, or explore the Aberdeen Pavillion’s ever-famous farmers, thrifting, and Christmas markets. Beyond lies the beautiful Rideau Canal, which means a skate in the wintertime is always within reach.
In terms of activities and programming for youth, there are several options. Among them include the Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group and Glebe Little League. For swimming, consider the nearby Jack Purcell Community Centre’s pool, the Taggart Family YMCA-YWCA, or Plant Bath on Somerset Street.

The history of the Glebe in Ottawa is a fascinating one. The name originates from an 1837 survey of Ottawa itself. 178 acres of land within the region was handed over to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church by the Crown to act as what was known as Clergy Reserve.
You’re probably wondering, “well, where does ‘Glebe’ come from?” As it happens, this is a word for church lands. What is today the Glebe used to be referred to as “the glebe lands” of the church. The name was shortened to the Glebe in the 1870s when it was opened for real estate development. In fact, real estate agents not unlike ourselves are the ones who coined the term!
Today, the Glebe has undergone radical change in the many decades and generations since its inception. Ever-changing with the times, it’s a trendy, vivid hive of activity at its heart, but it doesn’t do away with suburban sensibilities and a wide array of truly spectacular heritage homes, quiet tree-lined residential streets, and a serene and inviting atmosphere. A single visit to the Glebe’s shops, outdoor recreational activities, and landmark attractions reveals the true community spirit and love of all cultures within what is today one of the most iconic and trending neighbourhoods in Ottawa.
