Frequently Asked Questions

Situated in the heart of Ottawa’s thriving cultural melting pot, just due south of the Glebe, Old Ottawa South is a vibrant and welcoming community. The folks around here are friendly and courteous, even in the middle of the neighbourhood where Bank Street cuts through, and the traffic is heavier. Plus, you’ll have easy access to the nearby Riverside Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, plenty of great schools and public services, and more. This is one of the safer and more inclusive parts of town!

Old Ottawa South is highly walkable, largely due to it being much smaller than most of the other communities in the National Capital Region. A large number of folks around here tend to walk, which is a great way to see the sights and soak up some sun, though several are avid cyclists. Alternatively, it’s easy to hop on an OC Transpo bus or nearby connecting rail service, which is good news for commuters and those seeking to explore the many sights and attractions of the downtown Ottawa area.

Old Ottawa South is situated in what we know today as Capital Ward. This ward comprises of not only this community but also Old Ottawa East, the Glebe, Heron Park, Carleton University, and the Riverside area. A fun fact: Capital Ward is one of the longest-running wards in Ottawa, first established in 1909 when parts of various other wards were combined. This led to the eventual annexation of Old Ottawa South, making it part of the ward as well.

For public schools, there is Hopewell Avenue Public School, just off Bank Street and located on Hopewell Avenue. An intermediate school of the same name is part of this complex. Further north in the Glebe, you’ll find Mutchmor Public School and, beyond that, First Avenue Public School. To the south and across the Rideau River, children have access to other locations, including Ridgemont High School.

For Catholic schools in the area, there is Corpus Christi Elementary School in the Glebe. Private and/or alternative options include Astolot Academy and Educational Centre as well as Westboro Académie.

For post-secondary studies, there are no finer options than Carleton University and St. Paul University, both of which can be found in the immediate Old Ottawa South area. You aren’t strapped for choices, and a quick bus ride can grant access to even more options, including the University of Ottawa!

As the term implies, Old Ottawa South is situated in the southern portion of the most built-up area of the city. You’ll find it directly south of the Glebe and north of Billings Bridge. The community has natural borders in the form of the Rideau Canal to the north and the Rideau River to the south, while Carleton University’s grounds comprise of the western edge of this celebrated and beloved neighbourhood.

Old Ottawa South has many claims to fame, chief among them being the incredible post-secondary options available to local residents and those who are new to Ottawa. Carleton University, in particular, has a massive range of well-regarded programs, having fostered many success stories over the years by providing students with incredible learning experiences. The area is also well known for its outdoor recreational activities, ample park space, and beautiful riverside trails – it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and dog walkers alike! In addition, if you like to shop and dine out, you won’t be short on options thanks to Bank Street’s wide accoutrement of mom-and-pop offerings, well-loved chain locations, and more, all found right in the heart of the community!

In addition to the swimming and recreational options we’ve already covered, there are several sports programming options for youth. These include Douvris Martial Arts, Karate, and Kickboxing on Bank Street, Snowhawks Ski and Snowboard School, programming at the Old Ottawa South Community Centre, the Ottawa Tennis & Lawn Bowling Club, and Safe Swim Ottawa.

Of course, that’s not all. Take to one of several local playgrounds, the one at Brewer Park being one of the most popular spots. Or cross the bridge north and enjoy everything from concerts to picnics, music festivals, or a movie at the Lansdowne Park and its many surrounding retail and dining options. This also includes TD Place, home of the Ottawa RedBlacks.
