Whether you’re interested in buying or selling a home or commercial property in New Edinburgh, Ottawa, McElheran & Associates is happy to help you achieve the best possible outcome. This is an affluent neighbourhood rich in heritage, and there’s never been a better time to let your own history unfold in this cliffside-hugging haven. Discover all there is to see, do, and enjoy in this prominent Ottawa neighbourhood.

Outdoor Recreation

The New Edinburgh area is known for sprawling parklands, winding bike and jogging paths, and finely manicured landscaping that follows the Rideau River. Take in the commanding view at Green Island and Rideau Falls, then stroll up iconic Sussex Drive and visit Rideau Hall’s massive estate grounds. Whether you love to bike, jog, picnic, or take Fido for a walk, New Edinburgh is a beautiful little community that surrounds you with natural beauty all year round.

In the wintertime, take up snowshoeing or go tobogganing. In the fall, wander around the hidden pond and tranquil, still lake in the nearby Rockcliffe area, flanked on all sides by brilliant foliage with secret paths to explore (plus several benches for the perfect snack break or time with a favourite book). Come springtime, discover garden-lined pathways and beautifully maintained landscaping surrounding massive estates, embassies, and more – this area has a collective love of flower-growing!

A Wholesome, Fun-Loving Community

For kids’ sports activities, consider the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club’s day camps, paddling, sailing, and tennis programming, or stop by the Ottawa Rhythmic Gymnastics Club! As for swimming, nothing beats a natural wonder. Situated in the Caldwell-Carver Conservation Area, next to McKay Lake, is “The Pond,” a hidden local treasure in nearby Rockcliffe that offers a large body of water for swimming. For dedicated pool swimming, try Lowertown Pool off Cobourg Street or, closer to home, the Genest Outdoor Pool in Optimiste Park.

There are also several prominent community centres within walking distance of New Edinburgh or within the neighbourhood itself. These include the New Edinburgh Community and Arts Centre as well as the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre.

A Convenient Location

Owning a home or business in New Edinburgh gives you quick and easy access to OC Transpo bus routes leading downtown, but standouts such as the ByWard Market and Parliament Hill are so close that you can get there in a half-hour walk or even less. Frequently Asked Questions

New Edinburgh is the home of many prominent embassies as well as residences of dignitaries including prominent members of the community and parliament. It’s by far one of the safest and most welcoming parts of town, renowned for its leafy, tree-lined streets and soothing stillness. Noise levels are remarkably low, so much so that you’ll hear leaves scattering across the asphalt at the opposite end of the street. Of course, that doesn’t mean the community doesn’t know how to have fun, and you’ll find that a large amount of the population lives a healthy and active lifestyle. Many are dog owners, and you’ll see a wide array of breeds on every street enjoying their daily walks, making new friends along the way.

In short, this is one of the most comfortable, relaxed, and secure-feeling areas in Canada’s Capital. You’ll have a hard time wanting to leave once you discover New Edinburgh’s tranquility and natural beauty!

OC Transpo operates several bus routes nearby including Routes 1 and 7. However, this is a community ideally suited for exploration on foot, packed to the brim with goodies to discover (especially if you’re a dog walker). It’s clean, comfortable, and offers a variety of exceptional walking routes. It’s also a cyclist’s haven, especially as you move further away from the fast pace and shops of Beechwood Avenue and venture into quieter, calmer surroundings.

New Edinburgh is situated within Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward. This area gets a bad rep for being only the home of the rich and famous, but that’s far from the truth. In actuality, it’s a vibrant, loving, and welcoming community that encourages active exploration, enjoys a good conversation, and is deeply passionate about nature. Nearby, you’ll find Vanier, Rockcliffe, and Centretown.

There are a few notable educational options in the immediate New Edinburgh area. For public options, these include École Élémentaire Publique Trille Des Bois on Genest Street, Manor Park Public School, and Rockcliffe Park Public School. St. Brigid School is the nearest Catholic option. There are also several well-known private schooling options including Fern Hill School, the Macdonald-Cartier Academy, Elmwood School and, most notably, Ashbury College.

New Edinburgh is located northwest of Vanier, bordered along its southeast edge by iconic and thriving Beechwood Avenue. To the northwest, it’s bordered by Rockcliffe Park, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, and the Ottawa River. The affluent Rockcliffe neighbourhood forms the eastern edge, whereas the Rideau River serves as the southwestern border.

There’s never a bad time to take in the view from Rideau Falls just off Green Island. Or, explore the grounds of the Rideau Hall, a sprawling estate in the heart of the neighbourhood. Otherwise, go dog-walking in Stanley Park, a favourite thing to do among locals, or stroll along Beechwood Avenue to discover its many shops, eateries, and local landmarks including the St. Charles Church. Don’t forget to stop by the ever-popular local farmer’s market, which is set to be held at the church once more upon the completion of the beautiful new condo development on the site.

There are many wonderful little cafés to be found in the area. Stop by Union Street Kitchen Café for exceptionally warm and friendly service before resuming your stroll along streets lined with brickwork homes and plenty of greenery. Or, when in season, visit the Tavern on the Falls at Rideau Falls Park, offering truly amazing views of the Ottawa River, Canada’s Capital, and the Gatineau hills across the way. There’s also the local staple, The Scone Witch on Beechwood, for great coffee and conversation – not to mention some delectable baked goodies. Lastly, a trip to the area is never complete without a stop at Jacobsons for gourmet foods and gifts, Red Door Provisions for some of the best service and snacks in the city, and Ola Cocina Taqueria on Barrette Street for some of the finest Mexican cuisine around. We’ve barely scratched the surface here, so be sure to get out there and explore!
